Cotmore, Hereford bull bred at The Grove by Thomas Jeffries, by Old Sovereign out of a dam by Old Lottery, calved in 1836 and Royal Show Champion at the first Royal Show (Oxford, 1839): he was acknowledged to be the greatest bull ever produced to that day. His weight at 9 years (when this picture was painted) was 3,920 lbs. (1 ton, 15 cwt.). Cotmore was "bought in" at the sale at The Grove after Thomas's death in 1843.
In 1940, a ship carrying a consignment of Herefords to America was torpedoed in the Atlantic. Two of them swam ashore to Ireland, showing the stamina of the breed.
