Arthur John Gateley K.S.G.
Arthur John Gateley KSG was born on 23 September 1882 at Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire. He was born a Roman Catholic (and lived and died one too). He was the son of Stephen Michael Gateley KSG JP and Elizabeth Mary Hill. Arthur John Gateley KSG appeared in the 1891 census at 196 Hamstead Road, Handsworth, Staffordshire. He was sent away to school at Ampleforth College, York between 1893 and 1901. He was happy to recall one particular event at school: evening meals were silent, and on Cup Final night in 1897 a telegram was received at supper, reading "Aston Villa 3, Everton 2." In a school where most of the boys came from Liverpool, this pleased none of them but him. He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 in the household of Stephen Michael Gateley KSG JP at 196 Hamstead Road, Handsworth, Staffordshire; (Head: Stephen Gateley, 48, solicitor, employer, with his wife Elizabeth, 45, son Arthur John 18 and cook Phoebe Jane Emery, 25). Arthur John Gateley KSG was "Br Alexius Gateley" for a period of a year: he was clothed as a novice monk in the English Benedictine Congregation's Common Novitiate at Belmont Abbey, Herefordshire on 3 Sep 1901, and left by his own choice on 24 Sep 1902. His fellow novices included Br Sebastian Pike, his brother Br Raymond (Joseph), Br Celestine Shepherd, Br Gerard Gosling, Br Adrian Mawson, and Br Ignatius Rice, later Headmaster of Douai. He was articled as a solicitor (to his father presumably), and both he and his brother subsequently became partners in the firm, which changed its name to Stephen Gateley & Sons. Their offices were in Newhall Street, then Temple Row, and subsequently Colmore Row. He studied for his final examination to qualify as a solicitor at Lancaster Gate Law School in London. None of the class answered correctly the question, "What was the sentence for the crime of abortion?" AJG remembered it always, the lecturer having accompanied the answer with the words, "Death of a possible ratepayer!" He was awarded the papal honour KSG (as his father before him) for his work for the Birmingham Archdiocese, and became President of the Birmingham Law Society. He lived with Stephen Michael Gateley KSG JP between 1902 and 1910 at St Stephen's, Hartopp Road, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield. Arthur John Gateley KSG witnessed the marriage of Stephen Joseph Gateley and Winifred Mary Rawlins on 5 July 1905; a Tuesday! Arthur John Gateley KSG appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 in the household of Stephen Michael Gateley KSG JP at St Stephen's, Hartopp Rd, Sutton Coldfield; Stephen Gateley, solicitor (58), with Elizabeth, his wife of 35 years (55), Arthur, solicitor (28), Phoebe Jane Emery, cook (35) b Brierley Hill, and a housemaid. Arthur John Gateley KSG was a cadet in the Birmingham University OTC. His address was listed as 10 Newhall Street at this date of this record, 5 November 1914. He could not ride! He married Emily Gertrude Hodgkiss, daughter of Henry Edward Hodgkiss and Elizabeth French Blencowe, on 5 June 1915 at St. Anne's, Birmingham; his parents addressed a telegram of congratulations to "Lieutenant" Gateley, Liverpool: "We wish you and your wife every happiness and send both our love. Naughty to have kept secret. Write us your arrangements. Dad, mother." Arthur John Gateley KSG was Captain Gateley and in command of the 1st Manx Service Company, 220 strong, in October 1915. He was with the Company (then 215 strong) when it set sail on the Olympic, and joined the 2nd Cheshire Regiment outside Salonika on 13th January 1916. The Company became "A" Company of the 2nd Cheshires. He was ill with Malaria in July 1916. He was invested as a Knight of St Gregory for his services to the Birmingham Archdiocese, having been for many years its solicitor, and clerk to the governors of St Paul's Grammar School, Edgbaston on 22 December 1957. He lived in 1958 at Arrow Old Rectory, Alcester, Warwickshire. He died on 2 June 1966 at Arrow Old Rectory at age 83. He was buried at Oscott. He was was remembered by his grandchildren with great affection, in particular for certain sayings, spoken in his soft voice which never lost its Birmingham accent. "I was born too soon." "I'm a very fast worker" (at supper, when he always finished first). "God forbid!" when offered a second helping. If someone took a large portion he would say, "Have a banana," because bananas were scarce during and after the war. "Eric, or little by little" when weeding the area outside The Coach House, and wearing his white jacket with a wrap round neck, which he called his "stop me and buy one." "We're in, Meredith, we're in," when supper was ready. "Once a week and late at that," when going to church. At his brother, Stephen's funeral, when asked how he was, he said "Fine, they'll have to shoot me." Lastly, "Many a man is walking the embankment" (playing bridge, and not getting trumps out).
