He was Treasurer of University College of the South-West and Voluntary Air Deteachment County Controller. in 1918 at Devon. He died on 12 February 1926; "1925" according to Ralph Davis.

     Alfred Herbert ("Bertie") Davis was tutor or schoolmaster. He was C of E. He was born on 25 July 1864 at Lucerne, Switzerland. He was the son of The Rev. Samuel Davis and Jane Elizabeth Blackmore. Alfred Herbert ("Bertie") Davis appeared in the household of The Rev. Samuel Davis in the 1871 census at The Vicarage, Burrington, Devon. Alfred Herbert ("Bertie") Davis Monitor's Prize, Classical Exhibitioner, School Captain, Played in the Hockey XI between 1873 and 1883 Rose House, Rossall. He appeared in the 1881 census at Rossall School, Fleetwood, Lancashire; (Alfred Herbert Davis, 16, in Herbert Armitage James's House). He admitted as Pensioner with Major Scholarship, and matriculated Michaelmas 1883; BA (2nd) 1886; MA 1890 on 8 March 1883 Trinity College, Cambridge. He was assistant master between 1888 and 1896 at Dover College. He "I have a pair of silver candlesticks engraved with the name of my great-grandfather, AH Davis. In 1896 he won the foursomes competition [in Deal] along with "Captain Hambro". Indeed the club had barely been open a year at the time and so when I visited I witnessed his name engraved on the board there! A very proud moment indeed, but even more odd the chap I was playing with there for the first time found the name of his uncle "Tristram de le Poer Beresford" . He was captain in the late forties there too and so his name also was on the board at Cinque Ports (12 handicap apparently)."
He was (an unknown value) in 1897 at Wharfedale School, Ilkley. He married Ethel Harriet Gedge on 3 August 1897 at Cheltenham. Alfred Herbert ("Bertie") Davis appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Wharfedale School, Ilkley, Yorkshire West Riding; (Head: Alfred H. Davis, married, 36, headmaster, with his daughter Lorna M, 2 - and 14 boarders inter al.). He was (an unknown value) between 1909 and 1913 at Bromsgrove Prep School, Worcestershire. He was established preparatory schools at Ilkley, Clevedon and Bromsgrove between 1909 and 1913. He was established preparatory school; following which he was a private tutor. Then, "after retirement, he devoted himself to studies in mediaeval history, and wrote a "Record of St. Augustine's Priory, Canterbury"." between 1913 and 1920 at Malvern Link. He lived on 9 January 1928 at Burrington, Lindenthorpe Rd., Broadstairs, Kent. He died on 5 March 1934 at Highgate, London, at age 69; "aged 69" (RL Davis's "1938" seems incorrect.).

     Ethel Harriet Gedge was a pianist, and one of seven sisters. It is said that Elgar taught her and the sisters music and indeed dedicated an allegretto to them using the
notes G E D G E. She was born on 14 March 1875 at Upton-on-Severn. She married Alfred Herbert ("Bertie") Davis, son of The Rev. Samuel Davis and Jane Elizabeth Blackmore, on 3 August 1897 at Cheltenham. Her married name was Davis. Ethel Harriet Gedge died in 1963 at Davenham, Malvern.
