Mary Anne Jeffries witnessed the marriage of Peter Davis and Jane Jeffries on 30 January 1845 at Parish Church, Pembridge; by licence; the officiating minister being The Rev. William Lee, the bride's uncle by marriage, and the witnesses mostly being relations of the bride - her father's sister Mary Anne; her brother EJJ, and her mother's brothers John & Henry, brother-in-law John Morgan, and nieces Anna Maria Mitchell and Mary Ann Morgan - plus two called William and Jane, surnames illegible. The licence (dated 20 Jan. 45) says the groom was 33 and the bride 19, both of Pembridge parish, the bride's mother (a widow) consenting to the match. Mary Anne Jeffries married Charles Britten on 6 March 1848 at Staunton-on-Arrow, Herefordshire; The Rev. William Lee officiated, and Edward John Jeffries was a witness, as were four others. The groom, a bachelor, was of Byton, Herefs; the bride was of Staunton-on-Arrow, so perhaps living with Wm. Lee, the widower of her aunt Ann. The licence was dated 26 Feb. 1848, signed by the groom in a flowing and cultivated hand. Her married name was Britten. Mary Anne Britten appeared in the household of Charles Britten in the 1851 census at The Woodhouse, Byton, Radnorshire. Mary Anne Jeffries lived on 6 December 1866 at The Woodhouse, Byton. She appeared in the 1871 census at Lower House, Stapleton Court Farm, Presteigne, Herefordshire; Head: "Mary Ann" Britten, a widow, farmer of 544 acres (employing 11 men and 4 boys) a widow b Lyonshall and aged 47, living there with son William 22, brother-in-law Peter Davis (Farmer) married aged 60, his daughter Gertrude 23, and two other visitors and four servants. She died on 8 June 1880 at Rosehill, Lyonshall, at age 56.

Ellis Lee. Henry Jeffries was "at Woodhouse" Byton, with his recently-widowed sister (and his wife) - he was known as "Uncle Harry" - in December 1866.      Francis Joseph Gateley was RC. He was born on 31 March 1887 at 54 Summer Lane, Birmingham. He was the son of Francis John Gateley and Louisa Mary Wheatley. Francis Joseph Gateley emigrated in 1905 from Canada; [Freda Pringle Brown told me he had a bookshop during World War I, but it was worth very little. He had no dependants then, so went along to her father (SJG) to see if he could sell it for him, so he (Francis) could go to the USA - which he did, and there married Hilda, and had a child, for which SJG stood Godfather. After the War, Francis and Hilda - who had a large family - came over on an ex-Servicemen's visit from Saskatchwen. MMD]. He married Hilda Alice Hefford on 11 November 1919 at St. Paul's Rc, Saskatoon. Francis Joseph Gateley died on 8 May 1970 at age 83. He was buried at Saskatoon.

The Rev. William Lee

     The Rev. William Lee was born on 8 July 1801 at Ottery St. Mary, Devon. He was Curate 1825, Vicar 1841 between 1825 and 1865 at Staunton-on-Arrow. He married Ann Jeffries, daughter of Thomas Jeffries Snr. and Alethea Cheese, on 11 October 1827 at Pembridge; by licence. The Rev. William Leeappeared in the 1841 census at Staunton-on-Arrow, Herefordshire. He witnessed the marriage of Peter Davis and Jane Jeffries on 30 January 1845 at Parish Church, Pembridge; by licence; the officiating minister being The Rev. William Lee, the bride's uncle by marriage, and the witnesses mostly being relations of the bride - her father's sister Mary Anne; her brother EJJ, and her mother's brothers John & Henry, brother-in-law John Morgan, and nieces Anna Maria Mitchell and Mary Ann Morgan - plus two called William and Jane, surnames illegible. The licence (dated 20 Jan. 45) says the groom was 33 and the bride 19, both of Pembridge parish, the bride's mother (a widow) consenting to the match. The Rev. William Lee witnessed the marriage of Charles Britten and Mary Anne Jeffries on 6 March 1848 at Staunton-on-Arrow, Herefordshire; The Rev. William Lee officiated, and Edward John Jeffries was a witness, as were four others. The groom, a bachelor, was of Byton, Herefs; the bride was of Staunton-on-Arrow, so perhaps living with Wm. Lee, the widower of her aunt Ann. The licence was dated 26 Feb. 1848, signed by the groom in a flowing and cultivated hand. The Rev. William Lee appeared in the 1851 census at Lower Staunton, Herefordshire. He died on 6 January 1864 at The Vicarage, Staunton-on-Arrow, Herefordshire, at age 62. He was buried on 11 January 1864 at Staunton-on-Arrow. His estate was probated after 11 January 1864; will proved by sons, The Rev. Ellis Lee and William Lee - estate £450.0.0.

Ellis Lee witnessed the marriage of Henry Jeffries and Emily Gilbart on 1 September 1864 at St. Peter's, Bayswater, London; by licence; the groom being resident in the parish of Holy Trinity, Guildford, aged 31, a bachelor, chemist, son of Thos Jeffries, Gent; and the bride being resident at 64 Pembridge Villas, aged 26, a spinster, no occupation, daughter of Leggatt Gilbart, Gent., the priest being The Rev. Ellis Lee. The Rev. Ellis Lee died on 5 January 1865. He was buried on 11 January 1865.

     John James Yorke Scarlett was born on 12 April 1907 at Bodie, California. He was the son of John Edwin ("Jack") Scarlett and Annie Elizabeth Byner. John James Yorke Scarlett was christened on 9 September 1909 at St. Paul's, Kamloops, B.C. Canada. He appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 in the household of John Edwin ("Jack") Scarlett at Bodie, California; Head: John E. Scarlett, Mining Company bookkeeper, aged 30 [sic!], born in Canada to Canadian parents, living in rented accommodation with his wife Annie, 28 [sic!], born in England of English parents and their two children Evelyn 4 and York 3, both born in California, where their parents had lived for 9 and 7 years respectively. John James Yorke Scarlett went to Cheltenham College (as a day boy, arriving in 1920, leaving July 1925). He was confirmed on 25 November 1920 at St. Barnabas', Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, England; by the Bishop of Chichester. He won the Division III Drawing Prize, in the Summer Term, "Shackleton in the Antarctic, 1907-09" by Ernest Shackleton himself, when in Form Lower IV A, Military & Engineering Side of the College in 1921. He won a prize for holiday drawings and paintings (birds etc.), as evidenced by the prize book, An introduction to the study of Gothic Architecture on 1 October 1923 Cheltenham College. He won the Hornby prize for French (in the Army Entrance Examination) - as evidenced by his prize books, "Soldiers Three and other stories" by Kipling, and "The Golden Bough", by Frazer in June 1925 Cheltenham College. He went to the RMA Woolwich (where he was a Prize cadet). He was a 2nd lieut. in the Royal Signals in 1927. He married Frances Holme Wiggin, daughter of Francis Holme Wiggin and Margaret Carey, on 11 March 1939 at Kensington Register Office. John James Yorke Scarlett was a Squadron Leader in the RAF (and a Film Sound Recordist formerly) on 20 June 1945. He lived in 1946 at Kensington, London; "We moved from Ashprington House in Ashprington to lodge with cousins when Father went back to work for the RCA dubbing theatre in Hammersmith after being demobed", said James. They lived at 45 Queensdale Rd., 19 Brook Green (which was nearer to JJYS's work at the RCA dubbing theatre, Hammersmith); 9 Queensdale Place (Eva Nisbett being at no 7); and 37 Addison Avenue between about 1958 and 1963. He lived in January 1963 at The Old Rectory, Cadeleigh, nr. Tiverton, Devon. He lived in August 1973 at The Post Office, Fossebridge. He died on 23 January 1984 at Cheltenham General Hospital at age 76.

She was She arrived at Tilbury from Colombo on the "Lancashire" via Rangoon, described on the passenger list as of 20 Pelham Crescent, SW7; aged 22 on 20 April 1928. She married John James Yorke Scarlett, son of John Edwin ("Jack") Scarlett and Annie Elizabeth Byner, on 11 March 1939 at Kensington Register Office. He married Annie Elizabeth Byner, daughter of James Byner and Anne Sabina Wightwick, in May 1905 at San Francisco. John Edwin ("Jack") Scarlett emigrated from Bodie, California. He appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 at Bodie, California; Head: John E. Scarlett, Mining Company bookkeeper, aged 30 [sic!], born in Canada to Canadian parents, living in rented accommodation with his wife Annie, 28 [sic!], born in England of English parents and their two children Evelyn 4 and York 3, both born in California, where their parents had lived for 9 and 7 years respectively. He lived in January 1921 at Nam In, North Shan State, Burma. He died on 18 October 1938 at 1 Burkes Road, Beaconsfield, at age 77. He was described as a "Mining Engineer, retired" on his death certificate.
