Elizabeth Rice was baptized on 8 December 1809 at Sutton-in-the-Forest, Yorkshire. She was the daughter of The Hon. & Very Rev. Dr. Edward Rice DD and Charlotte Lascelles. Elizabeth Rice died on 7 October 1828 at age 18; the annual Book Society dinner the gentlemen present were much grieved to learn the tidings of the death of the fourth daughter of our friend and neighbour, the Dean of Gloucester, which occurred about three o’clock this afternoon. Miss Elizabeth Rice, a very lovely and unaffected young woman of eighteen, esteemed by most the flower of the flock, had been many days ill; it seems, that in the first stage of the complaint it was a bilious fever, afterwards aggravated to an attack of brain fever, from which the poor patient so far rallied as to lead her Parents and family to consider her convalescent. The Dean in fact, had attended a public business at Stow on Wednesday and Thursday last, and was very sanguine as to his daughter’s recovery, but a relapse took place, and she breathed her last this day. It is to be lamented, that she had no medical attendance from a distance; no Physician was called in’ our skilful Apothecary, Hayward, visited her in the first instance once, but alas! the hand of death is upon him too, and he is lingering on the verge of the grave in excruciating agony from an internal complaint. The gnetleman, who is about to succeed to his business, Mr Filkin, formerly and late of Tetbury, visited in his stead, but however experienced and clever he may be, and I believe really is, he is a stranger; Pitt, of Burford, an able practitioner, was sent for, towards the last, but when all hope was over. And so has the flower dropped and died: alas! poor Bessy Rice’ thy early death recals to mind the mournful strain of Schiller; “das ist das loos der schonen auf der erde”! She was buried on 13 October 1828 at Oddington; "4th daughter of the Dean of Gloucester."
