"In the Beginning": a millennium sculpture by Mike Chapman. On the portico of St Martin-in-the-Fields stands a smooth, nearly cubic piece of white stone about five feet tall. The top face is roughly hewn and angled slightly, with a carved new born baby lying on its back - as though the stone had been cracked open and the child found there. The umbilical cord is seen disappearing into the rock from which the baby has emerged - a human present in the chaos of creation. The inscription around the side of the rock says: 'In the beginning was the word and the word became flesh and lived among us. John 1. 14.' 2nd June 2008 |
